The Fire Science Academy received the 2026 Indiana Uplands Regional Collaboration Award.

Firefighters are often the first to run toward an emergency.

The knowledge, training, and courage required to save lives and property in extreme situations demand significant time, commitment, and financial investment. Those requirements can create obstacles for individuals interested in pursuing firefighting as a profession and contribute to workforce shortages across the Indiana Uplands.

Rather than accepting those obstacles as unavoidable, Ivy Tech Community College Bloomington, the Monroe Fire Protection District, and the Bloomington Fire Department worked together to create a solution. Their collaborative efforts earned the organizations the 2026 Indiana Uplands Regional Collaboration Award during Regional Opportunity Initiatives’ Annual Report to the Region on Oct. 2.

Together, the three organizations established the Fire Sciences Academy, a partnership that allows newly hired firefighters to complete required training while simultaneously earning college credits and industry-recognized credentials at no cost to the student.

By creating a more accessible pathway into the profession, the Academy is helping prepare the next generation of firefighters while expanding educational opportunities for those entering the workforce.

The impact of the collaboration extends beyond training.

Both the Bloomington Fire Department and Monroe Fire Protection District have committed to expanding support for Ivy Tech’s Firefighter Certification program through live-fire training opportunities and equipment loans, significantly enhancing training capacity.

As a result, the number of firefighter cohorts has doubled, creating new pathways for students and first responders throughout the region.

Ivy Tech anticipates a minimum 500% increase in annual Firefighter Certification completions over the next two years, helping address the growing demand for trained firefighters throughout the Indiana Uplands.

At the same time, the Academy is elevating the educational attainment of local firefighters while reducing costs for all three partner organizations through shared resources and coordinated training efforts.

This collaboration demonstrates what is possible when organizations work together to solve workforce challenges, expand educational opportunities, and strengthen public safety for the benefit of people, families, organizations, and communities.
